Marcia’s drawing of an angel that was given to Boyce Batey as a gift.

Later that night, the activity escalated again. The family was relaxing in the living room watching Snoopy and Perry Como with their neighbor and friend Tom Lashley. Marcia was making paper Santa Clauses on the floor in front of Laura, who was sitting in the center, green recliner. It was going on 11 p.m., so Tom said his goodbyes and headed home. Everything seemed like it should be. It had been quiet all day and they had even found themselves relaxing a bit—smiling, laughing, and getting lost in the programs.

Suddenly, the whole house was alive with a series of resounding crashes. They all jumped. The TV moved forward, nearly falling off the stand. The bureau fell over. The sewing machine fell over. The stereo and the ashtray fell over. The end table flipped upside-down, smashing a ceramic rooster lamp.

Jerry straightened things out as best he could and tried to calm down Laura and Marcia. They remained together in the living room, staying awake until nearly 2 a.m. when they were all finally exhausted and decided to sleep together right there in the recliners.

Laura was up at 5 a.m. the next morning, nervous and panicking about being in the house. She had come to believe the invisible force was getting stronger and was out to kill the family. They would all spend the night at Lillian’s house once more.
