Two days earlier. The apartment is already being packed up. The parents are packing. The son carries a box out of his room and puts it in the hallway. Nobody takes any notice of it. He stands there for a moment.

Then he goes over to the wall and draws a sign on it with a thick black pen: a coded name; a tag.

FRANK: Stop it –

ANDI: Why –

FRANK: You don’t do that –

ANDI: Why not –

FRANK: You’re going to ruin the walls –

ANDI: The walls –

FRANK: Yes, the walls –

ANDI: The walls are already ruined –

Brief pause.

In a couple of days the decorators are going to come and paint everything after nineteen years –

FRANK: Ruined? These walls aren’t ruined. They’ve had wear and tear, maybe, but they’re not ruined – ruining them’s what you’re doing – nobody’s going to be able to paint over that mark –

ANDI: So much the better –

FRANK has a small pot of paint and paints over the mark with a roller. The paint is special paint which doesn’t cover the mark.

FRANK: Look, it won’t go away,

He paints over the mark again –

it keeps coming through – look at it –
