Chapter 15 - Corey

Before I let her get away, my fingers grip Samantha's arm, pulling her back to me so I can capture her lips. She chuckles against my mouth and gives me a single peck before slinking away and shifting again. I love the sound of her laughter, especially when she's being playful with me.

After giving her a few seconds as a head start, I pick up her scent and take off after her. Her tail sways in the wind, and it's like a damn beacon directing me right to her. The closer I get, the wider her moves become as she plays hard to get.

In the distance, we see another clearing that forks into multiple trails, and tingles of excitement spread under my skin. I'm even more worked up thinking about all the possibilities of our adventure.

At the edge of the meadow, I launch and tuck, trying to take her feet out from under her. She yelps, dodging out of my way at the last second, and when I drop and land on the ground, she tears off in the opposite direction.

The thrill of her moving away amps me up even further. Her game of chase pulls at my inner beast, and though I've always known I was a dominant, the need to bring her into my hold and show her how a true pack works has never been stronger.

I'm not stupid. I know what I'm starting, what I'm instigating tonight. Now that I've convinced her not to hate me, I can show her that she belongs with me. That she's my mate.

I goad her with a soft bark, and she stops, slowly turning back and studying me. Her features contort into a wily expression as she hunkers to the ground. She's daring me to come for her, and it seems so silly because the truth is, I always will.

I'm about to pounce when a deafening boom shakes the ground around us. I shift as the fur rises on Sam's back, and her ears twitch, listening for the source of the noise. We turn in unison, facing the direction we came.

Billowing plumes of black smoke fill the air in the distance, and it takes me a second to realize it's coming from the direction of our condo.

Sam doesn't hesitate as she takes off toward the truck. I tear through the forest after her, leaping over logs and dodging trees, barely able to keep up with her.

Through our pack connection, I can feel Sam's fear. Selene is inside the condo by herself, assuming Ram and Conner haven't gotten back yet. I try to reach out to them both, trying to make sense of the information I'm getting, but they're too far away.

I burst out onto the trail just as Sam rounds the path toward the truck, not even stopping to shift. The change takes her over in a blur, as does my own, and when I hit my human form, I'm tumbling through the gravel and jumping into the front seat.
