God gave him a small assignment. He just had to deliver eight divine little words. That was it! His message was to be: “Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown.” But, Jonah was affected by his feelings toward the Assyrians.

He not only had a lack of interest in fulfilling God’s commission, he lackadaisically was taking it easy at home. How do we know that? God’s first words to him were “Arise!” Can’t you almost hear God saying, “Get up lazybones! Get going!”? That sounds a little like you and me when we say to God, Don’t call me, God, I’ll call You when I’m up to it … meanwhile, leave me alone!

The amazing thing about this “backslidden preacher” is that once he snapped out of his spiritless mood he made other plans. He fled his responsibility and headed west—the wrong direction. Jonah had just made a bad decision. He had just entered the whirlwind.

When we make bad decisions we, too, become like Jonah. We turn into rabbit dogs running in the wrong direction.

Jonah not only heads west—he goes in a downward direction. Jonah progressed into the second arrow—bad choices. He has made his decision, and there was no turning back for him.
