In my ninth-grade year, two years after the bully knocked my teeth out in gym class, I got into another fight. This one was even more accidental, for me at least. A few of us guys were goofing around before class, and I threw a grapefruit into a crowd and it hit a guy I didn’t mean to hit, didn’t even know I’d hit him at all, and as I was walking away he attacked me from behind. He was six feet tall; I was five-feet-five. Needless to say, he pretty much got to just pound on me until a teacher broke it up. Shortly after that a couple of friends asked if I wanted to take a karate class from a local guy offering lessons in his backyard. You’ll understand why there was not a moment of hesitation. By now I felt like a total wuss inside, unable to defend myself, unable to help the defenseless. I felt weak. Had I words for it at the time, I’d have said, I am not a Warrior, and never will be.
