Chapter 12

“Ooh wee, there’s going to be smoke in the city tonight.”

Xavier adjusted the graph on the financial report he’d been working on, then peered up at Skye. “What happened?”

She stepped farther in the office, closing his door. “That’s what I’m here to find out.”

With his attention focused on his work, he grumbled, “I’m trying to get this done and sent to Drew before lunch, Skye. Say what you need to say.”

“How was the game last night?” She perched herself up on the edge of his desk and picked up his stress ball.

He paused, fingers over the keyboard and glanced at her. “Why?”

It had taken willpower he didn’t know he possessed to leave Zara that morning. She looked so peaceful, like a beautiful naked angel sent down just for him. The first time he’d tried to leave, around five o’clock in the morning, she’d coaxed him back to bed with wet kisses and an oral treat. Finally, after another round of morning sex in the shower, he’d left.

“I heard you saw Naomi,” his cousin said.

“I did.” An e-mail popped up from Drew. He read it and typed off a quick response. “Zara told you?” However, he didn’t know how Zara could find time to tell Skye anything. The last time he’d seen her, she was trying to find something to wear because she had an early meeting with a client. The only other way Skye could know he’d seen Naomi was...

Oh, shit. He lifted his gaze. “Who leaked it?”

Skye arched a brow. “Who didn’t?”

He let out a low curse and pushed his chair away from his desk. “Hit me with it.”

She pulled out her phone. “It’s mostly the usual. ‘X and Naomi secret tryst at the arena,’ ‘Naomi sneaks out to see her ex in the middle of the play-off game,’ ‘The lovers make plans to run away together.’”

He groaned. “This is stupid.”

“But that’s not all.”

“Skye, just tell me.”

“Apparently, there’s a love triangle.”

He frowned. “That’s not new. That’s been the angle all along.”

“No, not you, Naomi, and Ethan.”

He closed his eyes as the pieces clicked together in his head. “Zara?”

“Exactly.”

Rubbing frustrated hands over his head, he groaned. “She’s going to flip out.”

“Yeah, she is. Have you checked your Twitter account? People are invested in this, man. I mean, your mentions are blowing up. You might be trending now.”

“Shit.”

“By the way, did you give her panties back?”

He glared at her. “You need to handle this.” He stood and paced the room. Chances were highly likely that there would not be a third night with her after this. She was going to run for the hills, for sure. “Put out a statement, or something. I don’t care what you do, just make it go away.”

“Already on it.”

“Does my father know about this?”

“Of course, he does. He actually checks his Twitter account. I keep telling you that you need to tweet. People are jumping on this because you’re being too mysterious. Put your shit out there, and folks won’t care about you anymore. It’s fun to speculate.
