CHAPTER NINE

Caspian wasn’t nervous, so he couldn’t understand the waves of anxiety that rolled off his beloved. Were her parents really that bad? She wasn’t afraid for herself, he could feel that much. She was afraid for him. That was worrisome.

He liked to imagine that his mate had grown up happy and content, surrounded by people that loved and protected her. But Nyx wasn’t acting like she wasn’t at all excited to introduce him to her family. Caspian wasn’t concerned about his own well-being even though his mate kept trying to imply that he was in danger.

No, he was going to be confident and project pride in his mate. What parent wouldn’t want to see that?

Marching with his head held high, he nodded to those fairy folk that stared and gawked at them. There were only a handful of non-fairy folk up in the Aerie. Anyone that wasn’t fairy was either visiting or on some other errand. This place could be uncomfortable for anyone who didn’t fly, or had a fear of heights. Walkways skirted along the buildings with no railings. Large landing platforms had been placed strategically to allow for anyone coming in to land where they needed to. But that also meant the wind was constantly moving through the space, almost enough to push a lighter person off an open ledge. Caspian could see how that could be nerve-racking.

Nyx led him through a labyrinth of walkways and promenades that made up the fairy stronghold. He liked the fresh air and the view was breathtaking.

“Beloved, try not to worry so much. I’ll be with you the entire time and then we get to go back tonight. Your place or mine,” he promised. He wanted to show her his apartment and let her work on making it their home, unless she wanted to move into a new place and start over fresh. Whatever she wanted, Caspian was excited to start his life with his mate.

“Let’s go back to your place. Just in case my mom calls in a Death Squad.”

Caspian laughed but noticed his beloved didn’t. “Death Squad? How did I not know the Sentinels had a Death Squad?”

Nyx looked over her shoulder to him, “Let’s cross that bridge when we come to it.”

His beloved had to be overreacting, and it was cute. This evening was going to be fine, and then he and his mate would settle into their life together.

Nyx kept pulling him down different corridors until they stopped at a tall ornate set of double doors. The plaque to the side had been inscribed with the words, ‘Shae-Lynn,’ in a fancy scrolled font.

“Okay, so I’m just going to get it over with right away. Then we’ll see how things go.” Nyx muttered to herself. Caspian gave her hand a squeeze and got one in return.

“Nyx, I love you with all of my soul. Nothing will ever change that. I don’t care if your family hates me for the rest of their lives. We’re going to be together, and I will make sure we’re happy.
