“Yes, it was tactless.” Quickly changing the subject, he told her what he’d seen yesterday in Chinatown: a chop suey joint with the name Kum Tu Soon (which he spelled), and a funeral home called Wing On. “Can you believe it?” he chuckled to himself.

“Very funny,” she muttered.

He took her in his arms. “Let’s go and have a nice breakfast; then we’ll hit the road.”

She responded indifferently to his kiss. She was still peeved about the incident, which he saw as one of fate’s little ironies. He failed to see that what she wanted was not merely an apology but an explanation.
