A Slight Mistake

After accepting a post-doctoral position at a small clinic in Berkeley, I began attending orientation and preliminary training there. One day on my way back home to San Ramon, I was riding the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train when my cell phone rang. (Looking back, I probably should not have tried to answer my cell phone while riding the train. There were many distractions, such as noise, lack of privacy, and less ability to think clearly, especially coming home from a busy day.) I answered my cell phone, and it was a person from Kaiser Medical center in Fremont, offering me a chance to interview for a post-doctoral position. I wasn’t thinking very clearly and I wasn’t sure that I would get the position. The train was a bit loud, and I think I said, “Huh?” a few times. I informed the person that I had obtained a post-doctoral position and was currently working in that capacity already, but that I could accept a part-time position as an employee at the medical center. I was informed that there were no part-time positions available. I declined the interview at that time. A few days later, after I thought about it, I could not believe what I had done. Eventually, I decided to discontinue my post-doctoral training at the smaller clinic and pursue another chance at a post-doctoral position at Kaiser Medical center in Fremont. I was able to contact the person who made the initial offer to me, but I was informed that the position was no longer available.
