Chapter Fourteen

Later that evening Lauren, Jade, and Ava were having a girl’s night in at Ava’s unit overlooking Brimland Point beach. The unit reflected Ava’s style—modern, sleek, and not a thing out of place. These nights were kept casual, and Lauren and Jade had dressed similarly in denim shorts and tank tops, but Ava’s idea of casual was black, painted-on tights and a white and black striped, strapless, clingy top that enhanced her already decent-sized breasts. A pair of pink, fluffy, high-heeled slippers was also her way of dressing down.

“How was your date with Mr. Pretty last night?” Jade asked. “Did you wear the slutty black dress like I told you to?” Excitement lit her eyes.

“What’s this about a date?” Ava paused with the wine bottle above her glass.

“Lauren and Jack went on a date last night,” Jade informed Ava.

“I did not—”

“Ooooh, a date with Jack,” Ava interrupted. “Please tell me he was good. I want all the juicy details.” She resumed pouring the wine, then sat back and made herself comfortable.

“It wasn’t a date. And God, Ava, I didn’t sleep with him!” But it had been extremely tempting.

“Shame.” Ava took a sip of Chardonnay and looked bored.

“So how did it go? Did you discuss business or did you discuss getting down to business?” Jade wiggled her eyebrows.

Lauren averted her eyes and picked a non-existing piece of fluff off her top.

Jade blinked in surprise. “You really did get down to business!”

“You did?” Ava sat straight up in the seat like she found the conversation interesting again.

Lauren couldn’t lie to them even if she tried. They could always see straight through her. “Jack kissed me.” Reaching for the coke bottle on the table, she poured some into her glass. She was sticking to non-alcoholic beverages, because she didn’t need another loose-tongue moment.

“Mr. Pretty,” Ava said slowly. “The football star who Jade wanted to be the father of her children kissed you?”

Jade stuck her tongue out at Ava then shoved a handful of peanuts in her mouth.

Ava blew Jade a kiss.

“Uh-huh.” Lauren tried to sound like it was nothing. “Don’t make a big deal about it. It was only a couple of kisses.” She bit her tongue the second she realized what she’d said. Alcohol or not, she still had a big mouth.

Jade’s mouth fell open.

“You might want to close your mouth, Jade,” Lauren said. “A mouthful of nuts is disgusting.”

“Not from my experience,” Ava mumbled underneath her breath.

Jade’s eyebrows disappeared into her hairline, but she didn’t comment on Ava’s crude remark. “A couple of kisses! That’s more than one. So how many times did you kiss Jack?”

“Aren’t you a primary school teacher? You should know a couple means two,” Lauren

said.

Waving a hand in the air, Jade said, “I know how to count.” “Really? It doesn’t seem like it,” Lauren teased.

Jade narrowed her eyes at Lauren. “Stop changing the subject and tell us about Mr. Pretty and his fabulous kisses.”

Succumbing to what would most likely be questions fired at her, Lauren sighed, curled her legs underneath her, and got comfortable.
