CAT

WHEN CAT ARRIVED HOME around four that afternoon, something was off. She couldn’t put her finger on what was wrong; it was just a feeling. She opened the front door half expecting someone to jump out at her from the darkened living room. But no one did. She poked around the ground floor of the house, and when everything seemed normal, she told herself she was just jumpy and headed upstairs to her room. She set her camera on her desk and slid into her chair—and almost slid right off again.

Her notebooks were gone. Every. Last. One.

She scrambled through her drawers to see if she’d tucked them away. They weren’t there. Not under the bed, not in her bureau, and not even in the bathroom.

Cat was certain she’d left her notebooks on her desk. Last night, after she’d uncurled from the fetal position, she’d recorded what she remembered of the readouts from the equipment before it got fried. She’d read through her notes before heading off to school. She also remembered the notebooks being here when she came back this morning to pick up her camera.

Panic knotted in her stomach as she flicked on her computer. While she waited for it to boot up, she opened the mini fridge where she kept her lab experiments. Her hand froze on the handle.

The shelves were empty. All her experiments—from the microwaved and oven-baked stalk nodes to Dani’s jars of soil to specimens that had nothing at all to do with the McMurray project—were gone.

Cat’s knees went weak. She sank into her chair. When she glanced at her desktop computer, a cursor blinked back at her from a black screen.

Operating system not found.
