Container handling shows some growth from the early years (2000–2001); however, even this growth could be considered to be conservative (3.7% p.a. in the period of 2000–2017; see Fig. 4.13). The growth trajectory was steeper in years 2000–2008, but this was caused by a combination effect of increasing containerization, competitiveness of Finnish export industries, a drive in consumption and imports as well as the favourable role of Finland as the Eastern transit route. Most of these drivers softened in the years 2009–2012; however, containerization continued and trade growth surprised on the upside in the last observation years. Therefore, the data series shows at least some identifiable growth. However, it should be noted that in 2009, but also in the years 2014–2015, container volumes declined, which had not been that common in earlier years (actually the economic problems of IT/dot.com bubble burst in early 2000s had no effect on container handling). The growth story of containerization is still in place, but it is much more vulnerable to macro-economic events.
