Surrender all actions to me,

And fix your meditation on your inner self;

Seeking no profit,

Heedless of issue, fight the battle.

CASE STUDY:

Bob is a recovering alcoholic, in his sixties. He had wanted to restart an exercise program that had helped him maintain his sobriety in the past. He was also engaged in lots of social service whereby he was assisting other recovering addicts in his community. However, despite his desire to restart his exercise program, he was unsuccessful.

The problem was explored in a therapy session when the therapist inquired as to why he really wanted to restart exercising since he was already in active and robust recovery. He leveled with the therapist: His goal was to get “girls” interested in him. His purpose was vanity, not spiritual purposefulness. When he confronted his shadow, became conscious of his deeper motivation, and reasserted his wish to exercise to maintain his recovery and do God's work rather than “pick up women,” he was successful in renewing a successful exercise program.
