Chapter Ten

“This is one hell of a first date,” Jacob whispered as he reached to take Nina’s hand. “Thank you for doing this for me.”

For the briefest of moments, she forgot what they were undertaking as she looked into his eyes. She couldn’t fathom what he saw in her. She was a mess—untrusting, fearful, and stressed all the time. Yet, here he was, bluntly stating yet again what his intentions were.

“Uh-hem,” Vivien cleared her throat.

“Do you know her name?” Heather looked expectantly at Jacob. “She’s focused on you and doesn’t seem to see me, so I can’t talk to her like this. She has short black hair, brown eyes, and a scar over her collarbone. Looks young, but that doesn’t always mean they died young.”

Jacob nodded. “Ester, my mother. I started feeling her after she died when I was a boy. I used to think I could see her when I was a teenager. It’d be like a glimpse in the mirror when I was drunk, so it was always dismissed as a trick of the mind.”

“How young were you?” Nina asked.

“Not old enough to be drunk,” he admitted. “Truth be told, I developed a little problem for a while in hopes that I could see her. It finally occurred to me that is not what she would have wanted.”

“I mean, how young when you lost her,” Nina clarified.

“Oh. Ten,” he answered.

“I’m sorry.” Nina squeezed his hand. “That couldn’t have been easy.”

Nina realized she had been selfish in their friendship. She had been so wrapped up in what had happened to her that she hadn’t asked him more about himself. She made a self-promise to do better in her relationships with others.

“You ready to see some magic?” Vivien asked, taking Jacob’s other hand. “Everyone form a circle and keep off the séance cloth.”

Heather stood between Lorna and Sue. Lorna gave Nina’s hand a small squeeze. They formed a joined circle around the cloth and book.

Heather looked around to make sure they were ready before stating, “It is our intention to talk to Jacob’s mother, Ester.”

Small flames erupted over the candle wicks as they lit themselves.

Nina gasped. Jacob drew closer to her, not releasing her hand.

Energy flowed through her as if swimming around them from hand to hand. She searched the circle, trying to decipher what she felt. The emotions were distinct, like a signature or a person’s voice.

Lorna genuinely wanted to help everyone feel better. She would put everyone else’s feelings and needs before her own. The mothering instinct inside of her was strong.

Heather seemed determined. Though she seemed at peace, a deep sadness had left its scars. Those scars had created a wall that made her guarded around others. She’d lost someone close to her. For some reason, and without any proof, Nina thought it might be a child.

Sue was nervous with anticipation like she was about to climb onto a dangerous roller coaster.

Vivien was having fun. The woman enthusiastically charged into whatever task was put in front of her.
