In the computer hardware industry, software has always driven hardware sales. Unfortunately, the market has not seen a significant personal computer application since Windows 95. Most of the new software platforms built today are for the mobile computing industry (i.e., for smartphones and tablet computers). Although the Internet remains the overriding force behind personal computer sales, the rise of wireless technologies and the subsequent convergence of devices such as cell phones with personal computers is providing a new spark for the companies within this sector. The storage industry market is also part of this industry and is led by EMC. This specialty industry is composed of companies that manufacture and/or distribute products considered as add-ons to (or even basic components of) computers, (e.g., storage devices). Today's computers need a lot of data storage capacity in order to use more sophisticated software and operate in more complex multi-user environments. In fact, the amount of storage capacity being used is expected to surge exponentially over the next several years, driven in large part by video and the Internet. Almost every technology development today is leading to increased demand for storage.
