Fourteen

One Old Crone

Dinner continued in a somber fashion, each of them slaking their hunger while their souls yearned. The tightness of their group unconfirmed, they each felt a connection to those around them—a dark connection—with Morcant Korrigan at its center.

“Do you think he could have planned this?” Sarah asked absently.

“I don’t see how,” Rider obliged, waving his fork for emphasis.

Swallowing his bite hurriedly, Blake gulped more wine. Placing the empty glass on the table, he stewed. “My brother is a bastard. There’s no telling what he planned. Or what he didn’t. He uses all things to his advantage when he has the means.” He eyed Joseline warily, noting she had hidden the trinket inside her blouse.

“You removed the amulet from Sarah,” Josee mused aloud. “Maybe you could do the same for me.”

“Ah, but we had a lot of help at the time. We won’t be able to do that again.” He glanced between Sarah and Karen. “Unless one of you happens to have an old crone lying around.”

Karen snorted, laughing at the inside joke. Joining her, the whole group caught the giggles for a moment before the wave of joviality subsided.

“Seriously.” Merideth mellowed. “How did you defeat him last time?”

Elbows on the table, Blake folded his hands at his chin to lean on. “Come now, dear. I don’t believe that’s a story you really want to hear.” He cut his eyes over at her newly found sister in warning.

“I, for one, would like to hear it,” Joseline countered, sitting up straighter in her chair. “Do tell.”

“Yes, I think we should all be interested in how you defeated the dark and powerful Morcant,” Rider teased.

Squinting at him, Blake’s lower lip pooched out.

Raising his hands, Rider appeased, “Hey, I’m just saying. If we’re going to figure this out, we’re going to need all the information we can get. Please, share.” He extended a palm towards his new friend.

“The question is, where to begin,” Karen lamented.

“No, the real question is, do we have enough wine?” Blake raised his empty glass for emphasis.

Rising, Sarah went to pull a few bottles from her secret stash. “There is always wine, Babe. I don’t think I could function without it.” Opening the bottle, she topped the glasses, starting with her lover’s. “I’ll start. Karen took me to a bizarre where she helped Morcant give me the amulet. He had cursed it and used it later that night to gain access to my room.”

Sitting back in her chair gruffly, she held her glass high to prevent from spilling it. Steady in her seat, she lowered it slowly, watching it come down. When it reached her lap, she sighed. “He raped me through a dream. That’s how it started.”

“Oh, Sarah,” Meri breathed. “I’m so sorry. Maybe this is one story we don’t need to hear.”

“What about me? Like she said, I helped him.” Karen took a swig. “Not that I had any real choice. He does that to you. Makes your mind all foggy.”

“And you have no control,” Joseline finished for her.
