Belle and Tamara grimace as the radio blares from the pilothouse. They hear Chris apologise for the volume and turn it down. It sounds like Peter is calling to ask about Tamara and Belle. Following their solid seven-hour sleep, Tamara and Belle emerge full of energy. While Chris stays on the radio in the pilothouse, Bree heads to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Facing away, they can see Bree’s shoulders heaving up and down. Chris quickly comes to her.

‘What’s up, Babe?’ he whispers.

‘I screwed up the hollandaise!’ she whispers back.

‘That’s alright. We can do without it. Don’t be upset, Babe.’

Bree sighs and starts poaching the eggs.

‘Come here!’ says Chris and hugs her. He kisses her. ‘You want to captain today? Take us to Hallo Bay?’

‘Sure.’

‘Let me get back to Peter.’ Chris goes back to the pilothouse and gets on the radio. ‘Pete. Sorry. No, we’re just cruising yesterday. Over. Yes, we’re off to Hallo Bay today. Over.’

Tamara can hear Peter asking about her.

‘She’s here, hang on . . .’ Chris passes the radio to Tamara. ‘Peter.’

‘Hi Peter.’

‘Hey Tamara, did you enjoy your first day?’

‘Yes, very much. We couldn’t believe we got so close to the bears.’

‘You’ll get even closer in Hallo Bay. I think Chris will take you there today.’

Tamara gives the radio back to Chris. Soon, Bree calls them to the table and they discuss today’s plan over breakfast.

‘Bree will take us to Hallo Bay today,’ Chris announces.

Tamara and Belle look at him.

Bree quickly nudges herself closer to Chris and put her arm around him. ‘We’re both captains.’

Seemingly encouraged by Bree’s seductive eyes, Chris looks back at her with admiration. ‘Bree’s a great captain—probably better than me.’

Is it genuine admiration? Either way, Tamara isn’t looking forward to Bree showing off how she handles the boat and the sea better than Chris.

‘Do you want to steer with me?’ asks Bree.

Belle ponders. ‘Ummm, maybe. Let’s see.’

‘Once we get there, we’ll hike up and get to the bears on foot.’

‘No way!’

‘Yes way!’

‘You’d better take your seasick pills,’ Chris tells Tamara.

‘Okay.’

‘Maybe you too, Belle.’

‘Are they safe for kids?’ Tamara interjects.

‘Yeah.’

What was she thinking! Of course Chris wouldn’t carelessly poison her little girl.

‘I don’t need pills. I’ll be fine,’ says Belle.

Chris secures the skiff as Bree starts the engine and speeds up.

‘Whoa . . . baby, slow down, slow down,’ he calls out to Bree and quickly joins her in the pilothouse. He stays with her there for a while. When they hit the open sea, he comes back to Tamara and Belle.

‘That’s Kodiak island, and beyond that is the Gulf of Alaska,’ Chris says, pointing to his right. ‘Remember we crossed the Gulf from Juneau to Homer?’

‘Yes,’ says Belle. ‘That’s what island, you said?’

‘Kodiak.’

‘Hmm. Isn’t there a Kodiak bear, Mum?’

‘Yes. Well remembered!’ says Tamara.

About half an hour later, they hit some big waves.

‘Oh no . . .’ Tamara sighs.

‘Did you take the pills?’

‘Yeah. But I’m not sleepy yet.’

Chris radios in to Bree: ‘Babe, maybe we can make a bigger turn so we can avoid these waves .
