Chapter Twenty-Three

Vickie hid her face in his shirt. “I don’t know how to be a sister.”

“You’re Melody and Kira’s in all but name.”

Her head came up. “I gotta call them.”

“Tomorrow,” Rory said, taking Victoria by the shoulders. “Right now, you need blankets and pillows for the library.”

She looked toward the stairs. “For my sisters. I mean, they say they are, but they’re strangers, aren’t they?” Victoria looked as earnest as Rory had ever seen. She bit her lip. “Should I have asked for their birth certificates?”

“I suppose, though they resemble you, and you didn’t ask for my ID.”

“Logan and Mel are friends with a retired judge, who’s married to a retired D.A., who had you run through the system. You don’t have a criminal record and the references on your website check out.”

“Well there’s me in my place.” He’d not underestimate her again. “Tell you what. I’ll get their IDs.”

Victoria gave him an eye-twinkle, an electric one that went straight to his poor upstaged libido, cut off in its prime by intruding siblings. Their presence would hamper his search for the key to the hidden compartment and his ability to get to the unicorn, once he found a key. And he might as well stop trying to charm Victoria into his bed. Her sisters were reading his bloody mind.

When he went downstairs, Destiny handed him their birth certificates before he asked, bang-on spooky. He wondered if he could control his thoughts.

Hell, he didn’t want to hurt Victoria. He wanted her to be happier and wealthier for his stay, and she would be, if her sisters didn’t interfere.

“Fun to have psychics in the family, eh?” Storm said.

“Is that what you do, Storm, read minds?”

“You got it in one, hopscotch, plus Harmony and Destiny have their radar locked on you, too, past and future, so don’t you be scamming our sister.”

Victoria appeared on the stairs, with blankets, in time to hear Storm’s warning, of course. “Storm!” she said, “Thank you for trying to protect me. That’s the nicest thing you’ve done all evening.”

Storm slammed the refrigerator door. “Yeah, well I don’t like getting caught at it, so next time you think I’m being nice, don’t bring attention to it. Got that?”

Destiny chuckled. “Remember this ‘maelstrom’ of warm fuzzies, Sis, because in Stormland, this is a Hallmark moment, and you might want to paste it into your scrapbook. They don’t come every year, you know.”

“I’ll never mention it again.”

Storm frowned. “See that you don’t.”

Rory pushed their birth certificates across the table.

“Yep,” Victoria said with a sigh. “Sired by the same loser.”

“He’s got a lot to answer for,” Harmony said. “But we are sorry to intrude on you two.”

“Better that you did. It was definitely a case of being saved by the bell.”

“Ach, and we agree on that.” Not.

“Hah,” Harmony said to him. “I’m on to your wicked intent.”

Storm got in his face. “Not gonna happen, Romeo.” She faced Vickie earnestly. “Rent! If we triple up and do chores after work, can we share one room for one grand a month?”

Victoria shook her head.
