THE BIG QUESTION

So now comes the big question: Are any of the ten scenarios I just described a reality in your life? Do you have your own personal Hirams looking at your odd behavior and saying, “What’s up with you?” If so, there are a couple of hard truths you need to think about.

HARD TRUTH #1: TRUE FRIENDS’ SUSPICIONS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS JUSTIFIED

The typical response when we sense suspicion being directed our way is to blow it off. We laugh, as if the mere idea is the funniest thing we’ve ever heard. We tell our loved ones they’re imagining things, they’ve seen too many movies, or they’ve misinterpreted the facts. And yet, our friends are not stupid. They know that normal people don’t suddenly become weird for no reason. Respectful people don’t suddenly become rebellious for no reason. Trustworthy people don’t suddenly become undependable for no reason. Happy people don’t suddenly become moody for no reason.

Now you might say, “But Mark, what if I really do believe the suspicion being directed toward me is unjustified?” In that case, there are two possibilities. The less likely of the two is that you’re right and, for whatever reason, your loved ones really are imagining things. The more likely possibility is that you have a blind spot. A blind spot is some flaw in yourself that everyone in the world can see but you.

A number of years ago, as part of an evangelistic campaign, another preacher and I paid a visit to a woman who had been in the Miss America pageant a few years earlier. I was looking forward to the visit, figuring the woman would be beautiful and articulate. She was, but I didn’t enjoy the visit because from the moment we stepped into her home, we were harassed by her dog, which was some sort of pit bull mix.

I had taken a seat on the couch and crossed one leg over the other when the dog came tearing into the room, barking and growling like a demon straight out of hell. You might know that, of the two strangers in the house, the dog decided to eat me first. When I saw it galloping my way, I left my leg crossed as a kind of buffer and braced myself. The dog skidded to a stop and stuck his head up through the opening in my crossed legs so that his chin was resting on my crotch. His teeth were bared. Saliva was dripping from his jowls and he was growling.

At that moment I understood the meaning of abject terror.

I saw children and grandchildren that I would never have passing before my eyes.

My only hope was that our hostess, the lovely and beautiful young woman who looked like a movie star, would call off her dog or, better yet, wrestle him away from me. She didn’t. Instead, she laughed. Hysterically. And then she said, “Aw, he likes you!”

I was so frightened I couldn’t speak.

Finally sensing my fear, she said, “Just stick your hand down and let him lick it.
