Nearly an hour later, I’m realizing that I might have to admit defeat. And it’s not for my lack of planning or trying. My house is a little two-story Christmas cottage. The aesthetic I was going for was cottage core and I completely nailed it with all the whites and muted Christmas colors I picked. But Drew’s house looks like the freaking house in Home Alone. Like an exact replica and he didn’t even pull out his phone to look at pictures.

There’s no way I’ll win against that, because Home Alone is Gran’s favorite Christmas movie.

“I thought you didn’t like Christmas,” I whisper to Drew.

He barely glances at me before he replies. “I might not like Christmas that much, but Home Alone is a classic.”

He’s not wrong. But I still hate that he’s probably going to win. Maybe that’s a little bit petty of me, but I was so ready to squash him like a bug.

“Holly,” Tally says, her voice one of warning, as if she can read my mind.

But before she can say anymore, my cousin Aly pipes in. “How did the two of you meet? I don’t think we’ve heard.”

This catches Dad’s attention. I feel like I haven’t talked to him at all since he picked us up. We hugged last night, but he and Beth left right after caroling and before the hot chocolate because Beth had to work early this morning. And I was not in a clear mental state to talk to anyone while we were caroling, I was too worried about what I was doing—or not doing—that would get us caught. Dad smiles at me, as if encouraging me to tell this great story.

“To be honest,” I tell my family because every single person seems to be looking at us right now. “I don’t remember the exact time I met him. I’m pretty sure I saw him once before the school year started, then again at our teacher meetings, but I don’t really remember. I know, not very romantic.” I try to shrug it off, but I feel disappointed. I always wanted to have a spectacular meet cute like everyone gets in a romance movie, something that would be completely unforgettable. But I honestly don’t remember the first time I met Drew. He’s been such a grumpy constant in my life for the past three years, that it’s hard to think of a time when he wasn’t around.

“I remember,” Drew says, surprising me. We all swivel to look at him, including me. I expect him to be looking at his graham cracker house, like he has been all night, even when people have asked him questions about himself, but he’s staring straight at me.

“Oh yeah?” My cousin Shane asks from the other side of the room.

“I’d just moved into my house. I had a roommate at the time, Felix. He and his boyfriend invited me over to his cousin’s house that was next door. Something about having a welcoming party of sorts, but really it was just takeout between some friends.
