“Piranhas!” Cleo screamed. “Get out of the water!”

“I said that a half hour ago!” Gabriel yelled. “Piranhas are eating machines!”

All three kids kicked toward the shore. Evan could feel the small fish grabbing at his skin, at his clothes, at anything they could sink their teeth into. He, Cleo, and Gabriel swam like lightning until they landed on the muddy bank. Even in the shallow water, the piranhas kept biting, only disappearing when every part of every kid was on dry land.

Evan rolled onto his back, panting. His soaking wet trombone case lay beside him. But when he looked up, instead of blue sky, he saw yellow with purple polka dots.

Cleo clutched Evan’s arm. “Locke’s parachute.”
