Chapter Eleven

Why did it feel like a damn storm was brewing all around them?

First Tessa, and now when he finally thought they were rid of Jake, he finds a way to stress her out even more. Lyndi had worn a faraway look a dozen times tonight, and he knew that legal paperwork was weighing heavy on her mind.

Barbecued fox probably tasted awesome.

Stark finished counting his tips and made his way back to the office, where he’d seen Lyndi’s purse earlier.

This was the opposite of a robbery.

Stark looked at the terrifying leather thing, sitting there, holding all of its womanly mysteries. A man worth his salt knew damn well it was dangerous messing with a woman’s purse, but he had to. Lyndi wouldn’t take the money he’d made unless she found it later, when it was too late to give it back. She was stubborn and independent and prideful and perfect.

Stark could hear her telling the last server goodnight out front. She would be headed back here soon, so he steeled himself and shoved the wad of cash into the side zipper compartment that was open.

He didn’t know why he needed her to have the money, only that it was necessary to his existence that he feel like he took care of her in some way today. Like perhaps he could take the sting off of the hurt another man was causing.

He liked when Lyndi smiled. Everything felt right, and hopeful, when she smiled. The faraway look and solemness in her eyes tonight made his wolf want to do bad things to bad people.

He’d never been a man that fixed things before. He was a breaker. But for her? He was going to figure out a way to put her feet back on solid ground so she could make whatever progress she wanted to. Fuck, he would lay himself over mud and let her walk on him for traction if it would give her smiles. After the last few months of his wolf pining for her, he didn’t care what that said about him, or what it meant. Her smiles plugged a hole in his chest that had always been bleeding, and fuck it all if it was a bad or good thing. He didn’t care. He welcomed the addiction.

Like now, he swung out into the hallway, and there she was, eyes downcast and thoughtful as she pulled the hairband from her dark waves. Her cheeks were rosy from the busy night, and her full lips parted slightly. The V-neck of her skintight shirt was pulled to the side and disheveled, and her curves looked like heaven in those second-skin jeans. And when she looked up at him with those eyes the color of good whiskey, he had to stop and stare. Why? Because she pierced right through him with that addictive smile. Plug, plug, plug.

The wolf inside of him whispered the same thing he’d been saying for the last week, since Daylen had lifted the order not to see Lyndi. Mine.
