The Single Eye
A number of years ago I was without medical insurance and I began having gall bladder problems. Eventually the doctors had to remove my gall bladder, and the operation cost me about $10,000. Cash .
I had been accumulating a little nest egg of savings, and it wiped that out. So I said to the Lord, “Okay, Lord. I know I’m cheap. And You know I’m cheap. So what was that all about? You didn’t need to put me through that to tell either of us that I’m cheap. Why did we go through all of that?”
Soon thereafter, as I was driving home from church, He gave me an inner word. He said, “You know, you haven’t had any difficulty with the fact that I am your source.”
“That’s right,” I replied.
But He said, “You had a little bit of seen and temporal security. And your eye hadn’t moved very much, but you were beginning to see that little nest egg and what you could add to that nest egg as your security.”
So I went back and reminded myself: God put a certain amount of money in the bank for me. My immediate needs included three plane tickets, which I had already purchased. Then the operation came along, and I was able to pay for it and not owe anyone anything. And I didn’t miss a single thing that I was scheduled to do. God told me: “Dan, I am not only your source; I am your security. That money isn’t your security. I am your security. ”
I already knew that, but I hadn’t ever really put it to the test. Looking for a God reason for what happened, I could see that as Mr. Cheap there wasn’t anything that excited me more than adding to that little nest egg. But God had another purpose for that nest egg, to teach me this lesson: “I am your security.”
I can tell that story and laugh about it, but only because of a choice I made. I could have chosen to see only external appearances, and I would still be bitter about having to spend the money. Or I could have chosen to see what God was doing in the situation. I chose the latter, and now I have laughter instead of bitterness. And I know as never before that He is my security.
Nothing happens in our life for which there isn’t a God reason. If we don’t want to see a God reason, we don’t have to, and we will experience, or reap, only the external situation. In my case, I would have reaped more anger about being separated from my hard-earned cash.
Frankly, I would rather not have God’s lessons for me be financial all the time, but that’s my Achilles’ heel, so God uses events in my life to work on that more than on something else.
The point is that God is our life now. The secret of the Christian life is learning to live out of the life of Another.
