Even though there weren't any guests around to see it, entering the gala room with Reagan on his arm was already his highlight of the night. He wasn't sure if he was imagining it, but there was a calmness within him that he didn't think had been there before. She'd always soothed out some of his worries, but this was more than that.

In all likelihood, he'd been causing both of them discomfort by ignoring the bond that existed between them.

Something he was going to have to spend the rest of his life making up to both of them. He supposed eighteen months wasn't too long when faced with a lifespan as long as theirs would be, but that didn't mean he felt good about depriving his mate of it.

Nevermind himself.

"Guests are starting to arrive," Reagan said. "I need to go oversee and make sure everything's all right. Will you be okay while I'm gone?"

He chuckled. "I've stayed alive this long."

"I know, but I'd rather be spending the entire night with you," she admitted.

"Same, but unfortunately an annoying doctor roped you into being the party planner."

"That's not a nice way to talk about your boss," she teased.

"I'm glad you're not calling me annoying."

Amusement danced in her eyes, but she didn't say anything. Instead, she leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss against his cheek.

He watched her leave, admiring the way the red dress she wore clung to her body in the most delightful way. It was strange to give himself the leeway to think about her like that in public, but it also felt right. Up until now, he'd tried to keep his attraction to Reagan something for his own private time.

"Eustace," Fabien called as he approached the bar.

Eustace repressed a small groan. The last person he wanted to talk to was his boss, especially when he was the same man who wanted to ask Reagan out on a date. Eustace knew his mate wouldn't go. Or even want to go, but that didn't mean he was going to be comfortable talking about it.

"Your party planner did a good job," Fabien said, admiring the room. "I'd say it's almost better than last year."

"Reagan is good at her job." And many other things.

"Perhaps after tonight, I'll be able to ask her on a date," Fabien observed. "Once I'm no longer her client."

Eustace didn't say anything. There was nothing he could say. He hadn't talked to Reagan about how they wanted to tell other people about them, especially the non-paranormal people in the world.

"Oh, is that Laurence Fisher?" Fabien asked.

Eustace glanced over in the direction of one of the hospital's wealthiest benefactors. "I think so. Is that a problem?"

"Only because I saw Benedict Greaves heading over to the silent auction. They're not supposed to be within fifty feet of each other at formal functions."

"They're not?" This wasn't good news. Eustace had seen all of the instructions Reagan had received and nowhere in them had been anything about Fisher and Greaves.

"Last time they did, there was an incident involving a champagne tower and three tourniquets.
