CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

“What are you doing back here, Alexa?” someone asks.

Alexandra doesn't blink. “You're shorthanded, and it's only a vodka order. I got it.” She pulls the glass door and reaches inside the refrigerator. At seventeen, she's already learned that anytime she speaks with authority, she's rarely questioned.

“Spasibo. Bottom shelf.” He leans across the bar and takes another order.

She selects a bottle of Beluga vodka from the bottom shelf. As she twists off the top, her eyes scan the vodka room to see if anyone is watching.

“That's not real plastic. The packet and the pill both dissolve on contact with alcohol in less than ten seconds. Just drop the whole packet into Boris's drink.”

“The whole thing?” I looked down at the tiny pill. My ticket to freedom was in the palm of my hand.

“All of it. Whatever you do, don't remove the pill from its casing. Your body heat will activate the chemicals, and the toxin will absorb into your skin. That's why it's in the packet.”

“All you have to do is slip that in Boris's drink, and you'll be on a plane to America within forty-eight hours.”

“The head of the table pours. If I pour and then pass him a vodka, he'll be suspicious.”

“Don't over-think it. Act normal, and you'll be fine.”

Stupid, selfish Americans. Alexandra takes a deep breath. If she ever wants to escape this nightmare and finally be reunited with her mother, she has no choice.

With the bartender's back to her, it's now or never. She pours the shot and places the bottle beside the glass. Then she covertly retrieves the clear, plastic-like pill packet. She scans the dimly lit vodka room. Boris is still at his table, talking to two associates. Does she honestly have it in her to kill him?

Yes, she does. She will do anything to get away from Anatoly. Her hand ghosts over the rim, and she drops the packet into the vodka. Like magic, the packet dissolves almost instantly into the clear vodka, and in a matter of seconds, the pill completely disappears. She places three more tumblers on the tray, lifts it to her shoulders, and heads straight for Boris's table.

Boris is a brawny man with long hair and a bulbous nose. He looks nothing like his leaner brother, and Alexandra is one of few people who know the men are not biological brothers. After a night of drinking, Anatoly let the information slip that he and Boris met at an orphanage when they were young boys and were released together just before the Soviet collapsed. Although they don't share the same blood, their bond is as strong. They are both cruel, impulsive, dangerous men.

He's never mentioned it, but Alexandra knows Boris doesn't approve of Anatoly's fixation with her. Anytime they are in the same room, the energy shifts. At times, when Boris looks at her, his eyes are colder than the temperature outside.

A few feet from his table, Alexandra is bumped by another waitress. She sidesteps, lifting the tray high. “Ostorozhno!”

“Prosti…” she apologizes over her shoulder.
