LAYLA

I wasn’t sure how much longer I could go on before my brain shut down completely or my heart gave out. I was beginning to question my sanity. When that siren went off, I’d lost the ability to breathe. To say I was on edge was an understatement. I understood that shit happened. But given what Sam and I were dealing with, anything, no matter how small or accidental the situation might be, would instantly rattle my nerves. Jordyn was in the same boat.

Earlier, when I’d sped home in the golf cart to check on her, she was pacing and panicked. I promised her there wasn’t anything to worry about. Once I had her calm, I made a promise that after my family was whole again, we would discuss her, what she wanted out of life, and what her future looked like.

If she wanted to leave and start a quiet life somewhere, I would support her. If she wanted to fuck Sawyer’s brains out, I would make that happen. How? I wasn’t sure. If she never wanted to be part of the vampire world and felt the need to leave the country, I would help her do just that. It would break me if she ever left, but if anyone needed a chance at happiness, it was Jordyn.

“Earth to Layla.” Cooper’s kind tone penetrated my thoughts.

I blinked as I straightened in a chair in his office.

He slid my phone across his desk, his blue eyes appraising. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I will be when I have Orion and Luna in my arms. This shit has to stop.” I was on the verge of tears.

He traded his desk chair for the one next to mine, studying me. “I feel your anguish, believe it or not. I don’t talk about this much, but it might help you. I was six years old when a rival pack kidnapped me.”

I reared back, holding my chest, but I didn’t say anything.

He flicked his wavy brown hair from his forehead. “My mom lost her mind. She couldn’t sleep or eat. She had nightmares. She was so distraught that the only saving grace for her was shifting. She took comfort in her wolf and could feel that I was alive through her wolf senses.” He paused for a breath. “I know you can’t shift, but you have magic, Layla. I can feel it. It’s not strong, but it’s there. See if you can tap into it. Maybe then you’ll feel your babies and sense that they’re alive. That might relieve some of your anxiety.”

The white-haired woman had said they were, but I didn’t know if she was telling me lies or not. I wanted to believe her. Still, in a way, I did feel Orion and Luna. I wasn’t sure how, though.

Cooper was sweet for trying to make me feel better. Also, it was good to know I wasn’t the only one who’d experienced the loss of a child—or in my case, children.

“Thank you for sharing that. I’m so happy you survived,” I said.
