Chapter 12

God is not a man, that he should lie;

neither the son of man, that he should repent:

hath he said, and shall he not do it?

or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Numbers 23:19

After dinner that night when the children were helping with the after-dinner cleanup, Aaron came back into the kitchen and asked about the letter to Bessie.

“Did you see it? It was by the door on the table.”

“Ach jah, I did see it. Heather took it with her to post since she was just on her way to the post office.” Courtney studied his face. “Why? Is something wrong?”

He shook his head. “Nee. It’s okay.”

“Would you like some hot tea?”

“I would, denke.” Aaron went back to the living room and waited by the fire for his tea. He’d decided not to send that letter wherein he’d been complaining about Courtney, and now he felt bad. She had barely been there for one whole day and already she was fitting in so well with all of them. He’d have to write another letter contradicting the one he’d sent and explain that he was surprised by her condition, but he was so grateful to Bessie for finding Courtney. He stood and walked over to his bureau to get pen and paper. While he waited, he penned a quick letter to Bessie, which he’d post the very next day.

“Here you are,” Courtney said as she handed him a cup of tea.

“Wunderbaar denke.” He looked up at her. “You certainly have a lovely way with children.”

“I’ve always liked children. I wanted to have many of them and have a huge family since I didn’t come from a big familye myself.”

“I only had my bruder, and I always wanted a bigger familye when I was growing up so I know what you mean.” He wanted to talk more and find out everything about her. There was something so calming about her nature.

“I’d better get back to supervising in the kitchen.” She gave a little giggle before she left.

Her laughter was like a clear ringing bell to his ears. It had been a long time since a woman’s laughter had rung through the house like that.
