Paul voiced his concern that the Christians were devouring and destroying one another rather than enabling, serving, helping, building up, and loving one another. Instead of doing what God had created them to do, they were pulling others down like live crabs in a pot of boiling water. Paul referred to this with harsh words—bite and devour.

I would be curious to know what Paul might say if he spent just a few moments on Twitter or other social media platforms and caught a glimpse of what Christians post. Or if he visited a church or small group and heard the whispers behind the scenes. The problems so prevalent all around us today—whether cultural, racial, political, or any other—have induced an atmosphere of vitriolic hate.

But while that reality may be true for the world as a general rule, it ought not to be normative among the people of God. God doesn’t want us clamoring, clawing, and yanking one another down in our desperation to lift ourselves up. Rather, He wants us all out of the pot. He wants us all to experience biblical freedom, released from illegitimate bondage so we can maximize our spiritual calling and potential.
