Shadow Missions

Sustaining a false self requires a lot of effort and leaves us with unmet emotional needs. Consequently, most defensive leaders develop strategies that both support their false self and give them the emotional rewards they crave. These are what psychologist and pastor John Ortberg calls our ‘Shadow Missions’. 8

Ortberg wrote, ‘Leaders love to think about mission, love to strategize about mission, love to cast vision for mission, love to achieve mission, love to celebrate mission. And everybody has a shadow mission. Our lives and the lives of the groups we’re part of can drift.’ 9 You can dedicate your life to fulfilling your true mission and yet be running an unseen self-referencing parallel mission. Over time that shadow mission can subtly drift into the dominant position of your life.

Since our greatest unmet need is to belong authentically, shadow missions act to give us a ‘belonging high’ through the praise or affirmation of others, or they work towards self-justification through over-achievement or competition. And these subtle strategies are typically just 5 degrees away from the leader’s true mission.
