CHAPTER EIGHT
âWHAT?â SKYE DEMANDED. Clearly he couldnât have said what she thought.
âUhâ¦â He blinked at her almost as if he were as surprised by his words as she was. âThat didnât come out right. I need a favor. It would just be for a few days.â He clarified. âI have a conference to go to in New York. Iâd wave it off, but Iâm giving the keynote speech and getting an award.â
âWell, I guess they might miss you then. When are we talking about?â
âThursday.â
âAs in the day after tomorrow Thursday?â
âYeah.â He grinned sheepishly. âI know itâs last minute, but it kind of skipped my mind with everything thatâs been going on.â
âIâd like to help, but Iâm booked the rest of this week. I have two engagement shootings and several appointments for family Christmas photos. Plus, I had two weddings last weekend, and thereâs putting together the digital presentations for all of it.â
âI know itâs asking a lot. And Jesse will take her during the days when you have to work. Ryann will be fine because sheâll have the kids to play with. But sheâs just getting used to being here. To me. I donât want to confuse her by putting her into another overnight situation so soon.â
Skye bit her lip. âThat makes sense.â
âI know itâs a lot to ask, but she knows you, loves you. Youâre the one constant sheâs had.â
âRett.â She stood, and the throw slipped to the floor. Bending she picked it up, carefully folded it in thirds and draped it over the back of the rocker. âItâs not that I donât want to help.â
No, it was the thought of being back in his bed again that disturbed her, because even with the baby monitor the guest room really was too far away. There was something about the intimacy of sleeping in his bed that threatened her carefully crafted detachment.
âHey, if you canât do it, I understand. Iâll see if Rick would mind staying here.â On his shoulders Ryannâs head drooped forward until it rested against his. Mink dark hair blended into mink dark hair so it was impossible to tell which was fatherâs and which was daughterâs. Her blue eyes blinked sleepily.
âOh, no fair.â She referred to both his guilt free acceptance of her refusalâwhich of course made her feel guiltyâand the emotional tug of seeing father and daughter bonding. He was trying so hard, she felt compelled to do more. After all, it wasnât like heâd be in the bed with her.
âWhat?â he asked, all innocence.
âPlease,â she mocked his virtuous stance. âOkay. If Jesse can watch her during the day, Iâll do it. I donât have any weddings next weekend, so I can make up whatever I donât get done then. Thursday, right? When will you be back?â
âLate Sunday.â
âOh. Okay. Sunday isââ
âRyannâs birthday. I know. Weâll celebrate next week after I get back.â He raised his hand to Ryannâs arm wrapped around his neck. âIs she asleep?â
âYes, sheâs out.â
âAh.â He tenderly pulled her around until he cradled her in his arms.
