Letting Go Once More

January eighteenth, Runner released Bottom Four. “Mundane World” climbed up the charts and reached the top ten in the states and England. Shortly after, Sam and I got back together despite our tumultuous history. I suppose making such a life-altering decision at a low point in one’s life wasn’t exactly the best idea. But I needed something to grasp on to, and Sam was it. He was the one standing right in front of me, while Alan was not. A few days into February, Carol got wind that Runner would perform in the city. We talked about it, and at first, I told her I didn’t want to go, “No way, no how.” But then she talked me into it.

“Veronica, this will be our way of finally saying goodbye to Tom and Alan. It’ll be good for us to go. One last time to see them, and then we’ll leave and never look back again”.

I was surprised getting tickets was easy with such short notice. Carol also heard that this concert was being held at a smaller venue, seating roughly four-thousand people, like other shows and not even close to packed arenas of days long ago. “Just like my dreams,” I thought. While tickets were easy, getting into the city was not. February twelfth turned out to be a rotten night. Snow, sleet, and then rain made driving into the city hell. Honestly, I’m not sure why we opted to drive. But at least we had the smarts to leave early and got there just in time to find a parking garage nearby. The venue itself was an old rundown theater, and we were equally disappointed once inside. The only seats were upstairs and were already taken.

“Standing room only it is then,” Carol quipped. We had no choice but to remain on the main floor amongst hundreds of other fans. Eventually, we finagled our way closer to the stage despite very little elbow room. Instead of one long show, it was split up into two, with the band playing less than an hour. We witnessed people coming and going from a door left of the stage during this time and assumed a private party was going on backstage. Plenty of drug use going on behind the scenes and occasionally right in front of our eyes. Over time, the air became smoky, so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Despite the superb view of the stage, I could barely look at Alan, and thankfully the hour seemed to have flown by quickly. Carol and I left the second the concert finished. Both of us feeling disappointed at the grungy venue they just played in, mirroring their appearance. “My gosh, Veronica, they look a bit worse for wear as the old expression goes!”

“No, kidding!” I concurred and started talking about all the drug use that we just witnessed. “Such is the life of a rock-and-roll star,” I sighed.

When I got home, all I could think of was what a hot mess we just witnessed, along with wanting to take a long hot shower.
