Daisy’s face pinched as she felt the sudden illumination hit her. She lifted her hand as though it would be enough to thwart the assault as the blinds further pulled apart.

“Good morning, Miss Daisy, I hope you had a good night's rest?”

“I was. I no longer am, thank you very much.”

“Apologies about that, but Mrs. Colmb has requested that you be prepared to join her in the morning room in short order.”

The frown grew on Daisy's face, “Morning room? What for?”

Ethel, the matured maid shook her head, “I am afraid you would have to ask the madam, when you join her.”

“Could you not ask her for me?”

The maid tried to hide how humorous she thought the request was, “Unfortunately, questioning the madam is neither something I am suited for nor what I think would be a wise decision, Miss Daisy.”

Daisy sighed and pulled the sheet over her body, “Fine. Tell her I have come down with an acrimonious headache, and I am unable to make it downstairs so early, then.”

Ethel stepped towards the chaise in the room, and picked up the dress and chemise that had been strewn on it, she went into the dresser in the dressing room, and placed them there then returned to the other side of the bed where Daisy had turned to allow her back the daylight. “Miss Daisy, I am afraid I cannot do that either as your mother has ordered, in simpler words, that you be brought down to the morning room—no matter what.”

“What happens if I say that I have no interest in coming down so soon? She could come up here and get me herself.”

“We both know we would not want that, Miss Daisy.”

She might not want it, but a devilish desire to see it happen crossed Daisy’s mind.

“I see that you have been busy,” Ethel said.

Daisy’s eyes snapped open to her maid holding gentlemen’s clothes that instantly looked odd in the setting, with the room already exposed to the morning light. She grew wide-eyed as she sat up on one arm, and looked from the clothes to the maid. Almost at once both women turned their gazes in the direction of the door with the sound of steps approaching.

“Up and to the washing tub, now, please, Miss,” Ethel nodded in the direction of the washing closet as she folded the men’s clothes quickly, and buried them in a drawer by the bed.

Daisy wasted no efforts heeding this time as she climbed out of the bed and went ahead of Ethel just as the door to the bedroom opened, and a handmaid walked in with a handful of fresh towels, curtsied at the heiress, and moved to the washing closet. Daisy met Ethel’s gaze once more before she was helped out of her nightdress, and she stepped into the tub that had already been filled.
