Chapter 10

“I can’t believe I thought this was a good idea.” Jason kept one eye on the road as he scrubbed a hand across his forehead. His knee-jerk reaction to Kyla’s nearly being run down two days ago had clearly overridden his determination to control his impulses.

“We are past the time for second thoughts.” Kyla, wearing a pair of kill-him-now denim shorts and a flowing tank top the color of a perfectly ripe pineapple, shifted in the passenger seat to face him. Given the excited expression on her face, he’d have thought she was a kid heading out on her first trick-or-treat run rather than moving into the neighborhood of a rumored crime boss. “Given Tristan seems to be our common denominator, it’s only logical he’s who we should be keeping an eye on.”

It made sense. In theory. But theory hadn’t included the reality of bunking with Kyla. Just the two of them. No doubt with endless hours of close quarters ahead of them.

Now, in another ten minutes they’d be pulling up to the front guard gate of Faustus Estates for a meet and greet arranged by Eden St. Claire. Kyla was right.

Too late to turn back now.

“What about your job?” Jason asked. “You have a trial starting on Monday. Shouldn’t you be focused on that?”

“I’m a woman. I can focus on a multitude of things at once. And we’re given the option of working from home when necessary,” she added with a dismissive shrug. “If something comes up at the office, Penny will call me.”

Jason shook his head. He couldn’t get rid of the feeling that this plan of hers, of theirs, was going to end badly.

Maybe there was still time to turn this around. Maybe there was another option Jason hadn’t come up with. But other than camping out in his car and following Tristan Wainwright around Sacramento for the next few days, he had zilch. That meant this all-encompassing idea was it. He sat uncomfortably in his seat. Maybe this was just his irritation at the fact that he’d had nothing to do with the plan itself. By the time Kyla told him about it, everything was already in motion, which left Jason to worry about all the things Kyla and Eden probably hadn’t considered. “What’s going to happen when Tristan recognizes us from Julia’s place?”

“A. You’re assuming he will,” Kyla said dryly. “How clever can he be, given what he’s gotten mixed up in? And even if he does recognize us, it’ll just throw him off-kilter and off-kilter people make mistakes.”

“Yes,” Jason said slowly. “They do, don’t they?”

She went on as if he hadn’t spoken. “B. Barnaby spoke with Tristan’s father—”

“He what?” Why was he just hearing about this now?

“Yesterday. They’re friends,” Kyla explained as if his IQ had suddenly tanked. “Their kids attend the same private school. Well, did. Tristan’s younger sister Alicia still goes there but—”

“Tristan got booted last Christmas for selling pot to three members of the faculty,” Jason said. “I read his file.
