Juvenile Magazine, The A periodical for children published in monthly parts during 1788 by John *Marshall. It was apparently only the second such venture by an English publisher (the first being John Newbery’s *Lilliputian Magazine). Marshall’s *magazine was designed as ‘an instructive and entertaining miscellany for youth of both sexes’, and it contained improving stories, verse, simple geography and other lessons, items in French, puzzles, and *plays. The editor was Lucy Peacock, an author of *moral tales and a bookseller in Oxford Street. She accepted contributions from readers. And readers were also encouraged to ask advice on such topics as mastering an unruly passion. Mary Ann *Kilner contributed some of the verses anonymously.
