CHAPTER 6

THE SUSTAINING FORCE:SOMETHING WITHIN AND ANGELS FROM GOD

HURRICANE KATRINA LEFT the Mississippi Gulf Coast in shambles. In spite of that, the women in this study were determined to make the best of things with what they had left and start the rebuilding process. This chapter will discuss what these Mississippi women survivors said was helpful to them after the hurricane and what they did to move forward.

To understand fully why support was so useful to overcome the obstacles these Mississippi women faced after the hurricane’s devastation, two examples provide pictures of the disaster’s magnitude in the region. First, the disaster’s damage shut down the Gulf Coast’s second and third largest cities, Gulfport and Biloxi, and left the city of Pass Christian and other smaller towns unrecognizable. The hurricane’s force was so strong that it relocated casino barges, that averaged thirty feet and more than 15,000 pounds, over a fourth of a mile onto already badly damaged highways [see photos below]. The main thorough way, Highway 90, was impassable [see the photos below], making it almost impossible for residents to move around in their community.
