My eyes are closed when I hear him enter the room. I saw the whole scene unfold from Otto’s point of view. Which is only because his mind is completely unguarded since he pulled me from the water. The way he stood up for me tonight has my stomach doing flips. I’ve never had someone who was on my side like that. Greg has been the only person in my corner for so long. But the way Otto is with me is completely different.

His soft steps leave the wood as he steps onto the plush carpet. I open my eyes just in time to see his large body sink into the armchair next to my bed. Otto’s head drops back against the back of the chair, making his face point up toward the ceiling. Each muscle in his body is coiled with tension. His throat bobs with a thick swallow. He has his fists clenched on each arm.

“Otto, I’m okay.”

My words are quiet, and they linger in the air between us for what feels like forever. “You almost died,” he chokes out.

“And you saved me,” I remind him.

I’ve seen the whole scene play out in his mind. I’m scared to tell him that I can currently see everything. Especially because right now my mind is a smokey wall for him. I’m not sure how to drop it at this point. But with everything he just did for me, I owe it to him to be honest with him.

“You have all your barriers down.”

He scrubs a hand down his face. “Yeah, I don’t have the energy to keep the walls up tonight.”

“Can you tell me how to drop them?”

His fists open and close, which causes the muscles in his forearms to coil with the movement. “Picture a gate opening in your mind. As if you’re inviting someone to come into your home.” I do as he says. Pretending to open a gate to my thoughts. He sucks in a sharp breath and then his body goes limp.

“Did it work?”

“Yeah, princess. It worked.” He sits forward and drags both hands down his face before dropping his arms to rest on his knees. Dark circles have formed beneath his eyes, making him look so much older and exhausted.

“Otto?” He lifts his head to look at me. I’m curled on my left side beneath all of the covers including multiple throw blankets. I still feel so much colder than I’ve ever felt before.

“Let me,” Otto murmurs, rising to his feet. He walks around to the other side of the bed. I feel the mattress dip as he slides in behind me. His warm body presses up to mine and he wraps a big arm around my waist, pulling me flush against the front of him. I immediately feel warmer than before.

A silent conversation starts between us.

Better? he asks.

Much better. I pause for a couple heartbeats and then ask, What happens now?

Otto sighs heavily. Now the castle will go back to normal. A full staff and the entirety of the king’s guard will be here by morning.
