Chapter Twelve

Ward was right. By ten o'clock the following morning, Leon and I were served with orders of protection. Leon wadded up his and tossed it in the garbage.

“This could really hinder my investigation,” I said, as I read down through mine.

“How do you figure?” Leon asked.

“We're not allowed within one hundred yards of him or his property.”

“That's not going to work for me, boss. I'll need to run out there sometime today and get my gun.”

“Sounds like a bad idea.”

“You're right. We'll wait until after dark.”

“Yeah, that sounds better. Can you whip me up a breakfast sandwich?”

“What do you want on it?”

“Egg, cheese, meat.”

“Ham?”

“Sure.”

“Swiss good?”

“Sure, and can you wrap it up?”

“You got it, boss.”

I poured myself a cup of coffee and walked out of the kitchen. Emily was stocking the cooler. Allison was mopping the restrooms. Norma was sitting at the bar sipping a cup of coffee and reading the St. Lucie News Tribune.

“Where'd you get that newspaper?” I asked.

“I bought it at the newsrack on the corner,” Norma replied.

“That's my thing.”

“Buying the newspaper?”

“Yes.”

“Now you don't have to.”

“But I like to.”

Norma shook her head. “Sorry. It won't happen again.”

“Thank you. Can I have the funnies?”

“Sure.”

Norma thumbed through the pages until she came to the funnies. She separated the page from the rest of the pages and handed it to me. I spun around and headed for the restroom.

“Whoa,” said Norma. “Where ya think you're going with that?”

“The bathroom.”

“Not with my newspaper. That's gross.”

I glared at her. “And that's why I like to buy my own newspaper.”

“Then go buy your own newspaper. You're not taking mine into the toilet. I haven't read that section yet.”

“I'm not going to buy another paper. We don't need two newspapers.”

“Sounds like we do.”

I sighed, handed her back the paper, and headed for the restroom.

“This is going to screw up my whole day,” I huffed.

Moments later, when I returned to the bar, Norma held out the funnies. “Here ya go,” she said. “I read them.”

“I don't want them now.”

“You're such a baby.”

“What're the specials today?”

“Leon hasn't given them to me yet.”

“Okay.” I checked the wall clock. “I gotta go somewhere for a little while.”

“You're not going out to Addison's are you?”

“No.”

“What?” Allison hollered from the ladies room. “You're not going out there, are you?”

“No!”

Allison poked her head around the corner. She held the mop in her hand. “The officer said you have to stay one hundred yards from him.”

“I know, Allison. I'm not going to Addison's.”

She narrowed her eyes and studied my face. She was looking for a sign that I was lying. “Okay,” she said. “Then where are you going?”

I didn't want to say I was going to a strip club.

“I'm going to take a drive over to the bar where Kat Cook works.”

“What's the name of the place?”

“It's over on US 1 in Port Saint Lucie.”

“What's the name?”

“It's a sports bar.”

“Name.”

“The Doll House Sports Bar.”

Norma chuckled. “You want me to grab you some singles out of the register?”

“That's gross, Daddy.”

“No it's not.”

“Does Laurie know you're going to a strip bar?” Allison asked.
