July 1DEEPER THAN WORDS

Never stop praying.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:17

Is this possible? Praying all the time?

Not if prayer always requires

a holy setting (i.e., a chapel);

solitude (i.e., being all alone);

stillness and quiet;

closed eyes;

eloquent words;

a heart bursting with joy and holy passion; and

ignoring all life’s other realities.

Only someone who never drives a car could possibly hope to pray like that.

On the other hand, if prayer is a continual awareness of God—a genuine sense of needing him like you need breath and developing the habit of dialoguing with him throughout the day, until you fall asleep with your thoughts on him—then the answer is a resounding yes!

Prayer is something deeper than words. It is present in the soul before it has been formulated in words. And it abides in the soul after the last words of prayer have passed over our lips.
