Sir Hartley Shawcross, chief British prosecutor, at a session in Berlin (the official seat of the tribunal authorities), at which the Allied prosecutors handed over their indictments for the trial.

Unfortunately, his duties as attorney-general required Shawcross to be present in Parliament for much of the trial, but he was more than ably succeeded by Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe. A dour and forthright Scot, Sir David proved more than a match for the pompous and patronizing Nazi officials. He had done his homework thoroughly and he had a good eye for detail, which proved crucial when confronted with the defendants’ favourite tactic of equivocation, evasion and convenient lapses of memory.

He was ably assisted by barrister G.D. Roberts and four junior barristers, who shared the burden of presenting the evidence on behalf of the British prosecution for the entire 284-day procedure. But those who attended needed more than physical stamina and commitment to justice to get them through some of the proceedings. They also needed a strong stomach.
