When her classroom computer refused to boot up, Sara sighed. “Everyone, please take out your reading assignment and begin that while I try to get the computer sorted out.”

Her third graders made a few murmurs, but otherwise obediently delved into their desks and pulled out the reading material she’d originally assigned as homework. When she saw that everyone was reading—or at least pretending to read—she called the front office.

“Hey, Linda, can you send someone to my classroom to help me with my computer? It refuses to turn on. And yes, it is plugged in. Okay. Thanks.”

She glanced at the clock. She really hated when she got off schedule, but you couldn’t plan with technology. It either worked, or it didn’t. She should’ve made certain to have a back-up plan in case her computer went on the fritz, but she needed it to show a video for a health lesson. Tapping her fingers against her desk, Sara was about to call Linda again when someone knocked on the classroom door.

“It’s open!” Madison, one of her students, yelled.

Sara shushed the class as they erupted into laughter. “Reading. Now.”

Opening the door, she was still looking at her class when she heard the voice of the AV guy drawl, “Hello.”

She froze. Turning, she saw that the AV guy was none other than Devin Yates, who’d called her a slut at the Fainting Goat only weeks ago. Who Harrison had taken outside and punched.

She stared at him, while he just smirked. Why in God’s name was he here? In her school?

“Just got hired,” he explained. “Can I come in?” His tone suggested that it wasn’t a question, but more of a dare, like he knew she wanted to tell him no.

She wanted to slam the door in his face, but if she made a scene, her class would never recover. Swallowing, she opened the door to allow Devin inside.

“Linda said your computer isn’t working?” He walked to the offending device and kneeled down beside it. An old desktop model, it needed to be upgraded, but Sara hadn’t had the time to put in the request.

“That’s right. It won’t turn on.”

Devin began to work, and Sara let out a silent breath. Maybe he was too drunk to remember. Maybe he feels badly. Maybe the sky is yellow and pigs do fly.

Sara walked through the rows of desks, making certain her students continued to read silently. She caught Alison Decker passing a note to Cassie Andrews, and Sara snagged the note with a whispered, “This is your first warning,” to both girls. She pocketed the note. Although most of her kids had phones and texted regularly, no phones were allowed at their desks for obvious reasons. Thus, students still tried to pass the occasional paper note during class, which Sara found both frustrating and amusing at the same time. What in the world did eight and nine-year-olds have to gossip about? Lots of things, she’d discovered as her collection of notes only increased with every passing day.

“Looks like your power cord was chewed through,” Devin said.
