Chapter 16

After Finn squares away the bill, we leave the restaurant and get back on the motorcycle. He roars it to life and we zoom down the road. We stopped at a little party store near my apartment building, Keg & Wine. Finn picks up two six-packs of a Canadian beer called Moosehead and I grab a bottle of raspberry wine. Once at the counter, I’m welcomed by the worker, Rodrigo, who knows me from my multiple visits here.

“If it isn’t my favorite customer!” Rodrigo smiles widely and holds his arms out. “And who’s this?” He says as he looks at Finn. “Don’t tell me you got a boyfriend and now you’re off the market!” Rodrigo laughs and I join in with him.

“Well, I am her soulmate.” Finn deadpans and it makes me and Rodrigo laugh even harder.

Once his chuckles die down, Rodrigo says, “That’s deep, man. Congratulations to you both.” He looks at both of us and smiles. “It’s rare to find.”

“Thank you.” I grin and look down at the counter, slightly embarrassed. I spotted some new products sitting out. Little twenty dollar eighth bags of marijuana and vape pens with THC cartridges. “When did you get this stuff?” I ask, picking up one of the eighth bags to inspect it.

“We got our license to sell it last week!” Rodrigo comments.

“I’ll add on two of these. Oh, and a pack of Newport Red one-hundreds, please.” I tell him, putting two of the eighth bags with the rest of my purchase.

“Okay then.” Rodrigo says as he scans and bags up my stuff. “That’ll be eighty two seventy three.”

Grabbing my wallet out of my purse, I hand four twenties and a five to Rodrigo. I wait for my change and put it back into my wallet, then my wallet in my purse.

“Thank you!” I tell Rodrigo as I grab for the bags but Finn grabs them before I can get to them.

“See you next time, eh?” Rodrigo smiles and waves as we walk out of the store.

Finn puts the shopping bags into the saddlebags on the back of the motorcycle after he removes the helmets. We drive the few miles it takes to get to my apartment building. He parks the motorcycle in the parking garage that is attached to my building. I let him park in my designated spot since I have no car and it usually sits empty. The elevators take their usual slow ass time getting down to the ground floor and once they finally do arrive, we enter. I push the button for the seventh floor and the doors close slowly before the elevator starts its creep up the shaft.

Silence fills the elevator and the tension between us is strong. Now there feels like a lot of pressure to start a relationship. I know this is what I wanted, to find my soulmate but now that I have it, I’m scared. What if I mess it all up? What if we fall apart and I lose my chance at a soulmate?

The elevator doors open on floor seven and I make my feet move slowly.
