Kieran wedged Eden between himself and Lucas, blocking her from Devlin completely. “You’re looking tired, old man. I’m surprised you had the juice to break the wards, given the fact I took everything away from you.”

The insult was the truth. Devlin had aged incredibly in these past months. His hair was completely grey, his face heavily lined and his body hunched over. But the bastard was crafty, and while he might be weaker, he was still the most dangerous person on this planet.

“Give me my fucking book.”

Kieran laughed, bracing his legs wide. “Not a chance. If you have the balls, then take it from us. Otherwise, we’re going through you.” He sensed a dribble of power in Devlin’s body, but only a trace, which raised the question of how he’d broken Rhiannon’s ward in the first place.

“I said. Give me my book.”

The guards closed in around them, and Kieran felt the presence of multiple Trackers hidden in the darkness. Since most of them could change into vicious, monstrous forms, he tugged Eden closer. No telling what they might do.

“There’s nowhere for you to go,” Devlin said. “Once I bring you lot back to the Circle, this entire business will be finished.”

His confidence was astounding, but with Eden trembling against him, listening to her panicked breathing, all Kieran could think about was getting her to safety. “If you want the book”—he nodded to Luc—“then come and get the damn thing. It’s just the two of us, and like you said, it’s about time this business between us is finished.”

The guards drew closer, and from the shadows, he heard a ripping sound, then feral growling and the glow of green eyes. Devlin smiled. “I’d let them tear you all limb from limb.” He took a breath. “But I’m looking forward to doing that job myself. Now be a good boy and heel.”

Out of nowhere, a binding spell hit Kieran in the chest. Not from Devlin himself, but from somewhere in the shadows, and the force of the magic drove Kieran backward into Eden.

Shaking the sting of it off, Kieran chuckled. “Nice try, old man. Who’d you bring with you? An intern? Now it’s our turn.”

Lucas hit the guardsmen with a blast of fire, while Kieran knocked Devlin to the ground with his icy magic, guards hitting the floor while Trackers hurtled across the fallen bodies, snouts dripping, huge, furred backs full of muscle. Another blast of Kieran’s magic pinned Devlin down while Lucas kept the Trackers at bay, the rising flames reflected in their eyes as they circled hungrily, their greedy eyes fixed on Eden.

“Get the girl through the portal. Take the goddamned book and get her out of here,” Lucas managed, sweating from the strain, tipping the weight of the book into his brother’s hands. Grasping Eden’s arm, Kieran hauled her into the portal, sidestepping Devlin, shoving her through in front of him. His only thought was getting her away from the monster, and the animals whose only purpose was to tear her apart.
