I decide to stay inside with Evan the following day. I browse through my laptop, trying to find something to do, since I can’t access certain websites when I’m in a different world.

“Adeline,” Evan calls me, his voice full of pain. “Adeline, please turn up the heat,” he adds and I sigh before I get up and head over to the thermostat. The display already reads seventy-six degrees. It’s incredibly hot and despite the fact that I gave him a comforter yesterday, he still wants to go higher.

“Evan, I can’t go any higher.”

“I’m freezing,” he cries out.

I rub my temples while taking a deep breath. I’m sweating buckets, but I’m not going to walk around in a sports bra and underwear. I’m already wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and spandex with my hair up in a messy bun in an attempt to just cool down.

“I don’t know what to say,” I mumble while walking to his bedroom and leaning against the doorway.

“I’m shivering, Adeline. And—and I’m so sore. God, it hurts so much,” he begs, turning to his side and staring up at me, the expression in his eyes weak and tired.

Two days passed and his appearance has changed dramatically. Under his eyes are black-purple bags that make him look sick, his skin has become deathly pale, and he’s breathing heavily despite the fact that his body isn’t burning hot. In fact, he feels incredibly cold, like he just sat in the snow for hours while frostbite grows on his fingers and toes.

“I know Evan, I wish I can do something about it. You just need to bear with it.”

“Can I have b-blood?” His teeth chatters and I nod, handing him the cup on the desk in his room.

He sits up, chugging the blood fast. “I want more.”

“No, you only need once a day.”

“Adeline, give me more,” he orders and I grow a little scared. I don’t know if he’s going to lash out at me.

“Sorry, but I can’t,” I quietly say.

I jump when he chucks the cup across the room with inhuman speed. It smashes against the wall, glass shattering on the floor. Blood seeps down the wall, leaving a crimson stain in its wake. I stare at Evan with my eyes wide, he has never been this much of a jerk before, but now I know he’s slowly gaining some vampire speed too.

“Are you kidding me?” I glare at him. I don’t want to be mean or start anything, but my eyes are giving him warning signs, silently telling him to not push it.

Evan is pissed, his nostrils flaring. We continue to lock gazes, our stares intense until he slowly realizes that I have no plans in dealing with his bullsh*t.

“I’m sorry, Adeline. I’ll clean it up.”

I shake my head, pushing him back down on his bed.

“No, I got it,” I reply back, heading to the kitchen. I wet a towel and go back, wiping all the blood I can before I collect the glass pieces. I turn around to leave and see that Evan has fallen asleep.
