Chapter 27

T erran rushed through his room, shoving the last few items he needed into the backpack he had been given for the trip. He could remember every formula he had ever learned, but somehow always seemed to forget something when he was headed on a trip.

Even as a child, he had been forgetful in this one small way. His father had always chided him gently about it while wearing his lopsided grin. Terran paused in the middle of the room. When was the last time he had a pleasant thought about his father? He tried thinking back, but gave up. It didn't matter, the man was gone and they all had new lives. Well, except for Mother.

A small ping came from his pocket taking him away from his reverie--a message from Catherine telling him to hurry up. He smiled and texted her he was on his way. They were actually going planetside. His heart began beating faster. He had been rather uncomfortable in the Captain's office with everyone else there. Even more so when Kelly had shown up with some random guy he had never met. Derek, that was his name. He would have to talk to Kelly about that later.

If only Anna had chosen to go down with them planetside, it could have been a family vacation of sorts. He knew that Operations would be her best fit, but he was still going to miss seeing her. Of course, he was going to be partnered with Catherine, so that was something to look forward to. They had reconciled since their last argument and Terran knew he was finally beginning to understand what it meant to pursue the Capital.

Zipping up the pack, he slung it over his shoulder and left the room, heading to the cargo hold. The thought of being on the Gungir again caused an influx of emotions. On the one hand, it would be exciting to head back onto the planet, but on the other hand he had almost died the last time he was on the ship.

He made it to the elevator and pressed the button to head down to the cargo hold. He tried to keep his breathing calm as the elevator descended. I'm going to be fine. No one is going to stick me with any types of needles. Just stay calm and try to relax. The elevator dinged and the doors opened, revealing Catherine standing with a broad grin on her face.

"Hey, you ready?"

"Yep." Terran replied as the tension left his shoulders. This time would be very different. He smiled and reached for her hand. In a few short minutes, they passed the U-shaped rows of supplies and arrived at a wide steel door.

Catherine input a number into the keypad to the side of the door and it opened, revealing a room larger than the first. The bay for the ships was rectangular and held four ships of the same style as the Gungir. Terran stared at them with his mouth open. They were beautiful.
