Apollo flopped back into the sofa at the sound of the front door being propped closed. “I don’t think Harrison has ever called me ‘Apollo’ before,” he said mildly. “I don’t like it.”

“What does he usually call you? Sparky?”

“Or Pol.”

“Would you prefer it if I called you one of those?”

He looked at her quizzically. “No. I like that you call me Apollo.”

“Because it makes you feel appropriately divine?” she teased. He’d looked so haunted ever since the attack, she was desperate to see him smile again. A real smile, not one of his performance ones.

“Because…” He hesitated. “You make me want to be more than I am. More than I have been, here.”

Felicity felt as though the ground was crumbling beneath her feet. Determined not to show it, she forced a smile. “More than being able to turn into a dragon, and use magic, and give me the most mind-blowing orgasm of my life given less than a moment’s notice?”

“Yes.” His eyes turned a richer gold and he bent to kiss her—then groaned and leaned back, resting his head on the back of the sofa. “Though right now I’d settle for being able to move my head without the room spinning around. I’m afraid you’ll have to give me more than a moment’s notice if you want a repeat of earlier.”

“It’s that bad?”

“I always get migraines after significant power drains. Food helps. I’ll be fine in a minute or two, once those sandwiches work their magic. You’re worried about me?” He managed to look wan and smug at the same time.

“Of course I’m worried about you. You collapsed.” She nestled against him. “And I’m worried… about other things, too.”

She forced herself to meet his eyes. His beautiful, golden, dragon’s eyes. I should tell him everything. About Montfort, and why I’m really here. It can’t be connected to this, but…

But what if Arlo or Harrison or someone else made the connection while they were chasing leads about the town’s mysterious attacker? Would they see that she worked for an infamous developer and put two and two together? Her chest seized at the thought.

“I am, too.” His magic reached for her, and she reached back, instinctively. “I haven’t been fair to you. You deserve answers to all your questions, and more.” A wry smile twisted his face. “Questions you don’t even know to ask. I shouldn’t have any secrets from you.”

She shook her head. “I’ve already pried into enough of your secrets.”

“Not quite enough.” His voice dropped. “I’ve been half terrified you would figure out the truth. You seem to have figured out everything else about me. My magic. How I play the fool when something’s worrying me. You see me more clearly than I do myself.”

And I keep my own self hidden. Felicity bit her cheek.

“But there’s one thing about shifters that you don’t yet know.” His magic coiled around her.

“There must be thousands of things about shifters I don’t know,” she responded. Magic lapped at her skin and mirth bubbled inside her.
