“Is the Lord’s Arm Too Short?”

God is prepared to multiply leaders to help Moses carry the weight of leading the Israelites, but the meat issue is still a considerable problem to resolve. Moses is still at a loss concerning how to face the raging crisis about manna and the demand for meat. In the wilderness, a place of barren waste, how can Moses respond to the demand for food? God will provide here also.

In what seems to Moses an absurd promise, the Lord announces that he has heard the people’s complaint and will provide meat. Not simply a sandwich or two, not meat for a meal or a day, but enough for an entire month. Moses reacts with stunned disbelief. He protests: “Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?” (Numbers 11:21-22).

Moses can’t imagine how such a need could possibly be met. Here they are in the wilderness! If every goat was barbecued and every lamb roasted, there wouldn’t be food for a month. Moses couldn’t imagine a supply of food this abundant if the sea were emptied of its fish. God responds to Moses’ disbelief with a challenging question: “Is the LORD’s arm too short?” (v. 23). Moses, are you questioning my ability? Is my capacity in doubt?

God’s response to Moses here is a powerful reminder for us when we come to the end of our resources, become anxious, and begin to doubt God’s provision. In your Land Between circumstances, listen for this question: “Is the Lord’s arm too short?”
