CHAPTER TWELVE

EVERLY

My back hits the ground, and my ears start to ring. Pain radiates all through my body. I gasp for a breath of air, panicking. I try to sit up, but I feel a sharp pain shoot down my back and my legs.

I blink, hoping to clear my eyes, but they just get blurrier. I focus really hard, trying to ignore the pain in my body. I blink several times before my eyes start to clear. I look to my side and see the little stream I saw earlier.

I can see sunlight streaming in from the opening of the cave. It’s the only thing that pushes the darkness away all around me. When I first saw the entrance to the cave and looked down, it didn’t seem that far to the bottom, but now that I’m looking up at it, it’s much deeper.

I close my eyes and try to even out my breathing. I can’t panic, that won’t do me any good. But it’s not easy when it hurts to move and you can’t talk. It will be impossible for Claire to come down here and help me.

I open my eyes, looking at the entrance again. I see Claire looking down at me, her lips are moving, but I hear nothing. My heart rate starts to pick up as fear creeps into my mind. I panic. Have I gone deaf?

The ringing starts to leave, and I begin to hear Claire’s words.

“Everything is going to be alright, Everly! Stay still while I run and get Alpha Vincenzo. Don’t move!” Claire’s voice breaks halfway through her talking.

I gasp for breath as Claire leaves. Thoughts race through my mind when I can no longer see her. Will they be able to help me? How are they going to get me out of here? My back and legs hurt just lying here. I’m terrified to try and move anything.

I attempt to adjust my position but am met with fiery pain. Tears build in my eyes as I lie there limply. I start to feel overwhelmed with everything. Tears fall freely down the sides of my face as seconds turn into minutes.

My arms feel heavy, and I can’t move them. Everything starts to tingle, and I know it’s not in a good way. This tingle feels like things are becoming numb.

Could I have hit something to make my legs and arms go numb? Will I be paralyzed after this? So many thoughts run through my head, and I cry harder. I don’t want to be paralyzed. I don’t want to die.

I’m sobbing after just a couple of minutes. I have to get control of myself because my body starts to shake and tense up the more I cry. What’s taking them so long? Am I going to be stuck down here? I don’t want to die alone.

“Where is she!” I hear someone roar.

I look up at the entrance and see no one, but I let out a sob of relief when I recognize Vinny’s voice.
