Chapter Sixteen

Anna

Difference of Opinion

The news that Amelia was dying and only Anna could save her was a lot to absorb.

As was the fact that her identical twin sister, whom she’d known less than a week, had come to town solely to ask her for a kidney.

That’s why Amelia was here.

A kidney.

Not for some big family reunion or sisterly lovefest.

Anna felt sick to her stomach. No wonder her sister had seemed so rattled when last night, Anna had told Amelia that she loved her. How could Amelia tell her she loved her back, when she only wanted one thing?

Anna’s kidney.

“W-why didn’t you tell me before?” Anna asked, struggling to control her hurt.

Shamefaced, Amelia glanced down at her clasped hands. “I tried a time or two but we got interrupted and then I didn’t know how to start. Not once I got to know you and your family. How could I ask a perfect stranger for a gift that precious? How could I ask you to make such a big sacrifice for me?”

“Then why did you stay in Moonglow Cove?” Anna put a palm to her belly, terrified she was going to puke. “Why didn’t you just leave?”

“We were having so much fun and I was getting to know you and it was really nice . . .”

“No.” Anna folded her arms across her chest. “I want the honest truth.” Staring down the length of the dark, stone jetty, the short distance between them felt like a yawning chasm.

“I—”

“If it was too hard for you to come right out and ask me for a kidney,” Anna went on, trembling with anger, “why did you really stay? You could have left. Maybe you should have left. I would have left under those circumstances.”

“I-I had no one else to turn to. Nowhere else to go.”

“What do you mean? You’re rich. You could go anywhere. Why not just buy a kidney?” Anna slapped a palm over her mouth. Why had she said that? It was hurtful and she didn’t mean it.

Amelia winced. “Money is all I have, Anna. I have no family. No job. No close friends. Not anymore. Just a few hangers-on who are there for what they could get. But you . . . you welcomed me with open arms. You didn’t hesitate. You accepted me right off the bat. No questions asked.”

Balling her hands into fists, Anna tried to reconcile the emotions churning through her—anger, sadness, hurt, betrayal, but at the end of it all was forgiveness.

Yes, she was ready to forgive Amelia anything, because in the end, she was her twin sister. They had a biological connection that Anna had with no one else on earth. Not her mother, nor her brother, not even her own children. Allie and Logan were half Kevin.

But she and Amelia?

They were identical twins. The closest any two human beings could be. Turning her back on her sister would be like turning her back on herself. But they had to work through this.

“I defended you. Kevin suspected you were up to something, but stupid, gullible me, I didn’t want to believe him.
