“Vendurella deserved it,” Round Glasses was saying. “To flout the law when he had been given every chance…”
“But violence, Lester, is not our creed,” the other man replied. The two wives were making a valiant attempt to appear interested. None of the four had as yet acknowledged us, and we had no desire to stop the flow. So we listened.
“What choice had they? The man obviously was fleeing to the hills. I don’t like violence either. World order through law. My creed for years…”
“True. True. But to shoot a man in front of his family .. .”
“Or let him escape to god knows what kind of activity that goes on up there. Andy, you couldn’t want that, now! How could you? More murder and plunder. We must take every precaution. Look at Biggerman. Of course, he’s not one of those crazy ethnics who’s half-cracked to begin with. I knew Henry, you know. Tough fella, but at least he didn’t want to run to the hills.”
“Only because he thought he could win,” the rumpled man said. “God, I hated his guts. I handled an arbitration matter for him. I was the referee and really threw him a bone. So what does he do? Gets on television and kicks the hell out of me!”
The man in round glasses laughed pleasantly enough. “Andrew, you just don’t understand the beauty of power politics.”
They chose to notice us then, for we smiled, too—an unavoidable proclamation that we were already party to the conversation. Introductions could not longer be postponed.
“I’m Lester Miller.” The man in round glasses offered a brisk, British handshake and proceeded to present Andy Murphy and their respective wives. In due course, we learned that Miller was a lawyer and Murphy taught economics at William Penn University.
“Little. Of course! Did a fine job at the hearings. Really had Brown’s number.” Lester said.
“Indeed, he did! A very smooth and I must say forceful presentation,” Andy added. The two women murmured soft, halfhearted approval, but it was enough to relax Nancy, who had begun to fidget, into the spirit of togetherness.
For a while we followed the same conversation route we had taken before. My good friend Leon…getting his wind…doubtless back in harness soon.…Heh heh. Yes. Of course. Then a pause to lift glasses from another floating tray. Snacks came by, too. Wedges of cheese and succulent little sausages. I wanted to take a dozen of each and would have, except for Nancy’s nudge. Refreshed, we plunged on to more word games.
“How will the World Court affect your operations, David?” Lester was referring to his image of me, that of an official, functioning under the wing of the JCFLA. Selling steel was of little concern, since I had succeeded in conveying the impression that my steel job was a cover for my real operations.
I took a moment to answer, deliberately pausing to sip my drink. I have seen Larry do this many times with excellent effect. They all waited. So I took another sip.
“Well, you’re a lawyer, Lester, and I’m sure you’re better qualified to answer that.
