“From The Darkness Comes A Whisper”
We remained in Las Vegas for a few weeks after the first Tyson-Ruddock fight, hoping to get in some rest and relaxation. Don King also spent time there. He started the annoying habit of storming into our quarters, yelling “Goddammit, Mike, you’re gonna watch something else besides those fucking cartoons!” It was at that time that we learned King had an extensive collection of documentary films about World War II and the Nazi movement. He would remove Tom and Jerry and Roadrunner cassettes from MT’s video player and stick in videos of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Don King sent me to Las Vegas’s main library to look for more films and even once had me fly all the way back to New York just to retrieve part of the video collection from his midtown Manhattan residence.
I remember a road trip in the spring of 1991 when I drove MT, Don King, and a reporter from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. King was all wound up in the back of the limo so I decided to eavesdrop by way of the voice-activated intercom. “The Jew was the nigger of Germany,” King said, into his rap about how “Hitler did to the Jews what the white man does to the black man in America.” What the Nazis did was to demonize Jews as “evil” and a “cancer which had to be removed.” According to King, that’s what “the system” in America did to black people by preaching “negrophobia,” the notion that blacks were “worthless and shiftless. ”
Don King claimed the “the system” was responsible for him being “held back” by the white man, even though the journalist reminded him that he was the biggest name in boxing promotion and was about to close a business deal worth more than $100 million. King quickly changed the subject, going on and on for what seemed like an eternity about the racism against blacks in this country. According to King, the white man would never give the black man a fair chance to succeed in the United States of America. During this long drive, King had Tyson as his captive audience for this incredibly repetitive rap. Over time I had seen Don King utilizing this Nazi propaganda technique on my boss: selling belief through constant repetition.
The journalist finally was able to change the topic. He wanted King’s response to numerous allegations over the years that he had stolen large sums of money from his fighters. Don King insisted that those allegations were just another example of white racism in America. Well-known fighters, like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Kenny Norton, and Roberto Duran, never had accused him of stealing their money. Only Larry Holmes had made such a claim, and King was upset the press had overlooked Holmes’ retraction. King said he had done great things for Holmes who didn’t have a penny to his name before meeting King.
